Eduardo Mondlane University Informatics Centre (CIUEM)

Location: Mozambique

The CIUEM was established in 1982 as a technical unit within the university with three main functions: it provides services to the UEM, it does research and it does extension work. It is based at the main university campus, and has a director and deputy director, who report to the Rector of UEM. CIUEM’s mission is to spearhead the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the university and in society at large, giving support to educational and scientific endeavour and testing and incubating the newest technologies and applications. The CIUEM works in partnership with all sectors of society, both public and private. CIUEM’s extension activities have involved working in different areas of ICTs for Development, testing and piloting initiatives to make the benefits of ICTs more widely available in the country and support implementation of the government ICT Strategy. These activities have included incubating the SchoolNet project, launching pilot telecentres, ScanICT and partnering UNESCO in the CMC Scale-up Initiative. The centre is a major partner of telecentre.org leading the implementation of the Community Information and Communication Support Centre (CAICC) networking project.
