Online Community - Telecentre.org Foundation

Dear Telecenter community,

We are in the process of developing a toolkit for using in telecenters so we can guide the administrators on how to provide services for people with disabilities and to guide them on tools and software that they can use.
Any lessons in this area?
Any good tools and software?

thanks
Catalina

Dear Catalina,

Thank you so much for this topic
Reality, the Software for persons with disabilities is very limited, but we are currently working to launch Academy Telecentre for PWDs for developing a toolkit to promote PwDs to use ICT.
Kindly find the website on the link:

Dear Ms. Escobar,

Nice to know about your interest on disabilities. What do you mean by that, print disabilities? if so, there are few, like DAISY. Using tab player for reading books etc.

Dear Catalina,
This was brought to my attention by one of my friend. He is partially blind and asked me to install a software for him to use. I've currently installed NVDA-Access but it doesn't seem to be working when surfing on the net. However it has worked fine with other applications such microsoft office and windows applications.

Even though NVDA-Acess is working I would prefer a software for especially internet browsing. The software is free to download. Here's the url: http://www.nvda-project.org. It is a dictation software that picks up key strokes and buttons that you click on and recites it. It is quite useful though.

National Association of Blind, New Delhi with Media Labs have developed a 'Screen Access Software for all' (SAFA) for the Blind or Visually impaired. The software is freely available at the following

url:http://www.nabdelhi.org/NAB_SAFA.htm

I have seen an actual visually impaired using this software. It is very good.
Talking and listening software is available from the Down’s Syndrome Association via the Website that supports the EDUCATION SUPPORT DISC FOR SCHOOLS. Currently: http://www.include.demon.co.uk
It is a big concern ! It is not only a concern but also a big challenge. It is a fact that many talented people with disabilities are barred from participating in regular development approaches. Evolving development systems, equipments and trainings on those are not comfortable for these special groups of people. It is noticed very often that they evolve and innovate the system, equipments and education materials which become compatible with general systems and equipments. but people with neurological disabailites may find difficulties to participate in such process. However there should be efforts to at least expose these special group of people on hardware, software related subjects and equipments and enable them with sufficient scope to work on or study the scopes for innovating compatibility with those. It is definitely challenging at begining but it yields with great result. Involve them, expose them and allow innovations to surface as per their requirement. Basically our attitude should be to allow them for further innovation on normal machines and softwares.
With profound regards to all of you

It is a big concern that requires great attention and instant action. PWDs are being left behind in most forms of such development just because there is no software suiting them.
I appreciate the innovation of developing software that will involve them
Thanks
