Hallo members, I have shared a story about mobile telecommunications giant MTN involvement in ICT Learning Cen.... You are to read and add your comments.
Comment by AHMED SUDAN on December 10, 2008 at 3:43am
During this month three occasions will take places (1) big Eid (2) Christmas (3) new year. In sudan we have 4 telecommunications companies (1) Sudatel or Sudani (2) Zain (mobitel before) (3) MTN (areeba before) (4) Canar . each one offer its subscriber special offer (more than 12 million subscribers). Sudani offers two packages mega 1 and mega 7 . on mega one they deduct 0.5 dollar per day and you call international for 0.25 dollars per minutes. On mega 7 they deduct 3.5 dollars per week and make international calls for 0.14 dollar per minute. On the other hand zain offers 50% discount through out Decembers (0.25 dollar per minutes international) and you can call every one have zain globally for the same price of local calls and also every one who has ZAIN or SUDANI and he is in saudia ariaba (bigrims or haj) can call or his family call him as if he calling locally less than 0.05 dollar per minutes. Canar offers talking 20 min. per dollar national and talking one hour nationally from canar to canar for only 0.30 dollars . on the other hand MTN call for free nationally and call 4 minutes and get 4 minutes for free internationally. On the other hand the internet connection is reduced to 30 dollars per month (24 hour/ day ) for the ADSL to 50 dollars per month (24 hour/ day ) for MDSL (mobile) to maximum 100 dollars per month (24 hour/ day ) for very high speed G4.
I want to conclude that high cost and low speed of internet is one of the challenges facing Telecentres sustainability. And it is completely solved in sudan by having more than one internet service provide and sometimes you can download a file of 250 M.B in less than 50 minutes

Hi all,
I am delighted to join this group. This is a group of solidarity, Solidarity in the African Telecenter development. I thank Jacob and Voices of Africa for Sustainable Development for starting this discussion.

Some of the issues to put forward is identify challenges and opportunities in African Telecenter development through regional networking and information sharing. What are the main challnges in making the African telecenter development?
Some of the challenges I have so far come across in strengthening African telecenters include lack of and cost of technology within african societies particularly rural areas, inadequate managerial and technical skills among people running telecenters and poor or lack of adequate infrastracture and this probably will lead to lack of access to resources.

Existing gaps in service delivery in various develoment sectors are some of the oppotunities for telecenters to prove their worth.

Local and international telecentrer development partners should increase their collaboration to forster and strengthen African telecenters.
I believe in regional networks that will exist to improve regional telecenter development.

I trust that we continue to explore avenues in this group to keep the spirit of development moving!!

Vision and objective
Ofok is dedicated to bring IT literacy to as many people as possible. We are therefore offering basic IT courses from well-known companies such as Cisco Systems and Sun Microsystems completely free. That’s right! Students will be taught by an instructor for free, and gain access to the online curriculum for free. Additionally, there will be a discount for exams… And anyone can partake in this endeavor!

How it works
Universities and high schools who wish to partake in this initiative can do so in alliance with the Digital Academy. An Ofok ambassador will head a group of Ofok volunteers – known as a chapter – in each university or high-school. In the high school, the chapter will select a group of students from each year group who will then teach the basics of IT to all the students in their year.

Within the university campus, the chapter will ideally consist of students from the
Faculty of Engineering who have a passion for IT. Within the university, the chapter will select a faculty team leader from each faculty. The faculty team leader will then recruit local faculty members who will act as mentors teaching the basics of IT to all members of his or her faculty.

Ofok will first begin its contribution to ICT for All by offering IT Essentials: PC
Hardware and Software through the Cisco Networking Academy Program and Free Open
Source Softwaren Essentials through the Sun Academic Initiative. All
certificates will be internationally recognized and issued directly from Cisco and Sun.
However it doesn’t stop here – there’s a reward! The chapter to have trained the largest number of people will be awarded free advanced ICT and business courses in Digital Academy. This will be the reward for those who strived hardest in our noble goal to reduce IT literacy in Egypt!

Goal
Knowing the basics of IT is the first and an essential step for any kind of development. Think about it… Information sharing on a wide variety of issues such as famine, disease, health treatments, educational and literacy programs has completely revolutionized our lives. The internet has made life better for everyone – and with technology becoming more advanced and more widespread, the potential for online learning, improved communications and setting up e-businesses will continue to grow. Of course, for all this to happen, it has to start somewhere. Learning computer fundamentals is only just the start, and we at Ofok feel very proud to participate in this endeavor!

Founders
Ofok NGO for Human Development

15 Ofok ambassadors have been selected for this project to promote ICT among young people with the mission to inspire others of their own age to gain ICT training. It encourages the development of young people through giving them the opportunity to fulfill their potential by developing their interpersonal and IT skills.

Road map into the future
As Ofok, our intention is to increase the level of education in Egypt. We plan to provide advanced technology courses by working in close alliance with students and young people by forming community groups. The final aim being… To empower the youth!

UNU Open Courseware
United Nations University launches the UNU OpenCourseWare Portal, which offers open access to about a dozen courses developed by three of UNU's Research and Training Centres and Programmes (RTC/Ps) and the Tokyo-based UNU Media Studio. The intent of the UNU OpenCourseWare Portal is to make the course materials used by UNU RTC/Ps available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world. The initiative is not meant to replace degree-granting higher education or for-credit courses, but rather to provide content that can be used by educators for curriculum development, by students to augment their current learning resources and by individuals for independent self-study. The topics currently covered include e-governance, economic development and innovation, mangrove biodiversity and integrated watershed management. More courses are in production and in 2008, additional UNU units will participate in this initiative which promotes open sharing and global benefits for self-learn
