The nature may be favorable and unfavorable for agricultural activities. The farmers are thus
always ready to cope with the changing situation of weather or for facing the natural hazards for their survival.I have just returned from a field trip when a cold wave was causing great problem in most parts of Bangladesh.I observed that rice seedling was affected in some areas.
The seedlings turned reddish in the seedbeds. The cold wave hampered transplanting in the fields. But, the farmers did not give up to the cold weather. They resorted to appropriate management practices to adjust with the changed weather. They flooded the seedbeds with water in the evenings and drained out the same in the mornings. They also applied gypsum
in case the seedlings turned reddish. In this manner they saved their seedlings.
I also saw some farmers to transplant the seedlings while severe cold wave was blowing.
They felt their rice seedlings should be transplanted immediately to evade the problem of
crop failure due to the uncertainties of weather.
Farmers are always very alert to adapt with the changing climate. This attitude helps us to
stand against the problems caused by natural hazards and changing weather.I invite all friends to share their experiences on adaptation of the farmers with the changing climate.
