Question
Hello! I represent a University in North-Kivu, DR Congo.

I understand you have allot of knowledge concerning internet connections in the East African region.

I need your advice. We currently have a 512/256 20:1 C band connection. It is not enough for our University and it's very expensive. Can you suggest other technologies that I can research?

Regards,
Eric Pederson

Answer

I would advice that you consult you service provider, see on the possibility of to 1GB bandwidth (i see that currently you have been allocated 512 megabytes). That means that you will have to pay twice you monthly charges. By the way do not worry about the charges as I found out yesterday it will go down by more than fifty percent. Actually I had gone to pay for our internet and when I asked for our bill they gave me a figure less that half what we usually pay. On inquiring about this they told me that with effect from 1st April, internet charges are going down by more than 50 percent .

An not yet sure about DRC but am sure very soon you will soon see these changes soon. Also try checking with other service providers. There are very many sprouting everywhere who are taking advantage of the promise of fibre optic cables and with the healthy competition going on they offer very affordable rates.

I hope that I have been of help, good luck.

Hello Friends

I am very interested in the Microsoft Telecenter Owners and Operators Toolkit. It looks like a great resource. Unfortunately the links all seem to go to the pdfs that describe the toolkit, but none are the toolkit itself. This toolkit should be the equivalent of a CD-ROM of the resources that are described in the various pdfs.

If there is a way to get the actual contents of the CD-ROM that I am missing, could you please let me know?
Thanks very much, Heidi Neff (heidihneff@gmail.com)

Discussion Summary:

WIRELESS suppliers that would service Nepal Posted by Bhakta Raj Ranjit on June 25, 2009 at 12:44am in Knowledge-sharing: Tools & Practices

Synergy Nepal (SN)l, NGO committed to the promotion and establishment of telecenters in rural areas of Nepal, has already established 12 telecenters and will establish 13 telecenters within a couple of months with the support of different INGOs. SN is developing an innovative and sustainable project with high outreach in rural areas. Nepal is well-known for the Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world, with 2/3 of her land covered by stiff, high hills and mountains. The reliable connectivity of internet with moderate operating costs for poor Nepali are challenging. I have got information on satellite to date. Accordingly, SATELLITE IS EXPENSIVE IN TERMS OF DEVICE AND OPERATING COST. My request to all friends, please provide me information on : wireless supplier that would service Nepal.

I am also requesting for VOLUNTEERS for 13 telecentres who are experience in ICT (wireless, satellite, distance teaching), Project Management and grants proposal writing in rural areas of Nepal.

Can you try checking out these sites.

From Bhakta

Thanks for your generous information on satellite based internet technology. I highly appreciate for your efforts and give guidance for the sake of marginalized people. It is true that TS2 Satellite Internet services are being used in Nepal.

I have received some information from friends that this technology is very useful in rural areas of high hills and mountains like of Nepal.

Here are two other comments from my friends: 1) It’s operating cost is extremely expensive for rural poor people. Nepali Rupees (Rs). 20 per minute for a local phone call ( exchange rate US $ 1= Rs. 75). Whereas other local phone services are Rs. 2 per minute.

2) secondly, it hardware-telephone sets are also not cheap.

3) Thirdly, repair and maintenance: I am waiting on this information.

Therefore, considering the above comments, I would highly appreciate you if you could provide me more information on companies and technology which are affordable and reliable technology.

From Francis,

I have found a list of internet service providers in Nepal and you may go through them and find out their range of pricing.
