Hi Shuko,
Taking into account prospects of telecenters and their role in development they will continue to be used as key local institutions for delivering infotrmation resources and axis centers for local comunication exchange. In this regard, managers and practitioners continue to explore areas on how to improve management and sustainability of telecenters. And thus it reamins fact that telecenters will remain to be sustained as long as management and operational issues are effectively maintained.

Thanks Shuko

I am trying to help several youth centers in Southern Africa, but the areas do not have Telecentres. How are telecentres set up and who do I contact?

Thank you so much.
Barbara

Mr.Dean Mulozi is the Executive Director of the Zambia Association for the Advancement of Information and Communication Technologies (ZAA-ICT), He is also the regional Facilitator of the Southern African Telecentre Network (SATNET) which is under establishment . He has more information about youth centres that would like to set up telecentres , and if they do not know how to set up he would be the best person to advice such youth groups. He is a member of Telecentre and the creator of this group Southern African Telecentre on this network.

Hi Yapa, Barbara and Simon,
Thanks for your contributions to the group. Could not pick up your inquiry in time.
I am not sure which countries you are targetiing to support your work in Southern Africa. We have a number of countires that have developed greatly in telecenter development. However you may not get diffrenet names used for telecenters. Some of the countries may call them Information Kioks.
How can you establish telecenters? I am sure you have a strategy in place for your work. One key issue is the involvment of the local communities through identification of their community needs and services as regards to the use of ICTs as tools to facilitate development needs.
As Yapa points out, the sharing of information in the development is one of the key factors for success.
So Barbara, let us know your countries of choice, perhaps we can work together and support the initiatives.

Thanks

Dean

Hi Barbara,
I can site a number of countires that are moving towards telecenter development. For example South Africa and Mozambique have a number of telecenters one can learn from. Others are Botswana and Zimbabwe.

I can safely inform you that SATNET is ivolving quite succesfully and we hope bring many of the telecenters and their development initiaves in Southern Africa into one successful regional knowledge sharing and information exchange network. And hopefully this will help the work and activities of telecenters to contribute to the livilihood development of the people in the region.

Thanks

Dean

Dean,

Thank you so much for the information.

Are there any model telecentres that I could visit in the future, if funds permit?

Is there any research data available on what makes telecentres successful and what are the challenges?

Barbara,
Lots of telecenters you can visit among southern African countries. There are Community multimedia centers and community telecenters you can visit. The locations will depend on the choice of countries you could select. I could either go for Mozambique, Zambia, South Africa or Botswana.
As I said before there are number of research data available on how to make telecenters successful. We have had a discussions in the same topic on this platform.

I amd still searching for sites that you can visit and will forward them to you. telecenter.org and unesco has some useful links that can be used for this purpose.

If you have specific questions will be glad to share,

Dean
