Hi Nasser, good that you thought of this group. In India, some telecentres are experimenting with telemedicine. But for it to be successful, you need the satellite technology which is not available to majority of telecentres. Still, it is a welcome step!
Another thing that some organisations leading the telecentre movement here are doing is that they are trying to motivate city based hospitals to porvide medicare to the rural poor. The MoU signed between MS Swaminathan Research Foundation and Shankar Nethralaya (a famous Eye Hospital in Chennai, India) is a good example of streamlining medical care through telecentres.

Hello Nasser, good work here. Telecentre are supposed to provide health related information to their community. Hope fully in this group we shall discuss ways in which this can be achieved.

Hi Nasser,
Good to have this health group discussion. Telecenters and rural based communitities lack adequate health care services. For Telecenters who can afford technology, this is another added value service for telecenters to partner with government Minitries of Health and help to provide health services either through telemedicine or health information resources to rural communities. The major challenge as Shipra says is the cost of technolgy and access.

I think key areas here is partnerships with resource providers, government and related agencies such as USAID. telecenters can explore challengies issues of HIV/Aids, Malaria, etc and see how these diseases can be mitigated through telecenters services.

I think as we discuss, we can find ways and means to encourage telecenters to find innovations and increase the mainstreaming of health services within telecenters.

Thank you for joining and the wonderful comments on this group. The objectives of this group are clear and shall remain.

Looking at comments from Shipra Sharma and Dean Mulozi among others, I realise the benefits of this group are already being felt. What I would request (from members) is to encourage more others to join, I believe that this is the group that should be joined by all Telecentre members considering that health is life and we all love our lives.

We need to prioritise this group and soon we shall kick start with a discussion

This's what i was expecting from you Nasser coz what i believe is that we shall prove or be disapproved from here concerning our intellectual as in being creative as regards to issues concerning our health not only to members of Telecentres but to all People in the Global village.
Very many outcomes are yet to be expected depending on the way i observe Brother.

Hi everyone, A great topic for discussion. At COL we are particularly interested in how local facilities like telecentres can be used to learn about health issues: by health professionals who are seeking ongoing professional development, by local knowledge workers like teachers and media workshops, and by members of the community-at-large.

Great discussion indeed!. Yes telecenters are really a good access points for health issues. I think health resource providers such as governments and NGOs can can provide online and offline learning materials such as CDs and Videos on health issues such as HIV/Aids, child health and maternal health information resources to telecenters. Imagine in rural community centers accessing these information resources for viewing either through Videos, power point presentations or through online services.

Awareness on healh issues through ICT tools could make a big change to most of our people in rural centers.

I agree about the potential of telecentres to do exactly as Dean suggests. I'd be interested to hear about any initiatives that have realised this sort of learning. Part of the challenge is how to move from "available information" to "learning programmes"; we can see a lot of potential for telecentres to provide access to open and distance learning courses, on health or other issues, online or via CD, however this access would be much more effective if there were suitable programmes constructed locally and also trained tutors in the centres who can support the learning process.
