I am so happy to be part of this group. I am currently part of the oneVillage Foundation Ghana team on the Digital World Forum Research.http://www.digitalworldforum.eu/

One key aspect of the research is Mobile telephony and web content. I will do a lot of dissemination of the outcomes to this network.

Thanks

Hi

Interesting topic “Telecentres & Mobile Devices”!

Are mobile phones and other devices a threat to the existence of Telecentres or complement the Telecentres?

Sameera.

Sameera, in my view, mobile devices are are not a threat. They are actually meant to be an integral part of telecentres. Today's computing and communication devices are wifi ready. Modern telecentres with internet an now broadcasting wireless signals with free or protected billing access.

This makes access better because you do not necessarily need to be within a restricted area before having internet access and other services. You can be enjoying fresh air around the telecentre facility or be in the snack bar.

In short mobile devices will very soon grant more access to information and enhance rapid development.

Thanks

Hi Christine,
The group is very inspiring. As we enter 2009, we have to work and find ways of integrating mobile technologies and tools into the work of telecenters. The last conference in Johanneburg provided some insights on how mobile phones as tools of communication can be used for social change.

As you have provided some of the resources to help as a reference, the discussion will help us to share more on this topic.

We will need to continue to identify areas in which mobile devices can be used effectively within telecenters to make a change in service delivery. For example, Mobile phone subscribers or clients can support telecenters by increasing service outreach either through research or market information services.
More and more initiatives can effectively incoporate or intergrate Mobile devices in telecenters.

Your mobile phone is vulnerable. Read this piece of news from the Huffington post dated July 24, 2009....
"The current investigation into the mobile phone hacking operation allegedly perpetrated by the UK's News of the World has highlighted the vulnerability of mobile communications that politicians, celebrities and everyday users have neglected to protect from unauthorized use. As we increasingly move from using personal computers to relying on mobile handsets, the need for individuals to take steps to protect the data on their handsets grows ever more urgent. Mobile usage is vast. Each day, billions of messages are sent via mobile around the world, which is more texts than Google searches.." Read the full story at Huffington Post
