About Me (biography and organization description)
I am the Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Human Rights, which is a non-profit volunteer organization working for the promotion of Universal Human Rights for the last 10 years. The Institute is committed to promote values of civil, political, social, economic and cultural human rights to strengthen democratic values, justice, equality, peace, security and tolerance in the Pakistani society through the use of ICTs for Development.

Previously, I have held positions of Senior Manager PMO with Pakistan’s largest converged services carrier, Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Limited (PTCL), Senior Project Manager, IT & Telecom Division at the Ministry of IT, Government of Pakistan and Assistant Director Programmes with the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS). I hold an MSc. in Development Administration and Planning from University College London and an MBA from Pakistan. Before becoming part of Pakistan’s dynamic ICT industry, I worked with the development sector for 9 years, specializing in ICT for Development initiatives.

In my various positions, I have managed the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Establishment of Multipurpose Community Telecentres (MCT’s) Project, prepared the Government’s Determination Study on Broadband Penetration in Pakistan and undertook the Alliance Française and COMSATS ‘French Online’ e-learning programme. Moreover, I also developed research pilot proposals on the themes of ‘SMART Schools’ and ‘Reforming Basic Education through the use of ROBOTICS’ in Pakistan. Other ICT4D projects that I have been actively and passively associated with include the ‘Industrial Information Network (IIN)’ Web portal and the ‘ICTs for Rural Development in Mountainous and Remote Areas of Northern Pakistan’.

I have also represented Pakistan in a number of international fora, including the WTO and ITU.
Areas of interest/expertise and types of services provided:
ICT-enablement of remote and underserved education institutions to promote education and access to information as a basic human right.

Development and delivery of educational, health and technical training programmes, particularly in ICTs, to remote and underserved areas of Pakistan.

Consultancy in social, economic, cultural, civil and political human rights, particularly education, for the voluntary, community, public and private sectors on both policy and practice.

Executing projects pertaining to social, economic, cultural, civil and political human rights, particularly education, in collaboration with the voluntary, community, public and private sectors.

Media activity, campaigns and occasional strategic legal interventions.

Projects Undertaken:

Awami Taraqi Markaz (Multipurpose Community Telecentres): Community Development through use of ICTs to establish contact at grass root level and deliver education, civil and political/socio-economic and cultural rights awareness and job opportunities. 10 MCTs operating across 4 provinces run by community members. Database of Area Specific social/economic facts and citizens voice regarding issues/problems pertaining to fundamental rights updated periodically.

Empowerment of un/under-served Communities through Establishment of Education and Community Broadband Centres (EBCs & CBCs): ICT-enable un/under-served educational institutions and communities of Faisalabad, Multan and Hyderabad by providing necessary hardware, software and systems along with access to broadband service, in order to bridge the digital divide and extend the benefits of broadband to a larger population.
