Philippines to launch digital literacy campaign for women

The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), in partnership with the PhilCeCNet and telecentre.org Foundation, will join the global digital literacy campaign for women, spearheaded by the telecentre.org, with the launch of the nationwide Philippine Digital Literacy for Women campaign on March 2 at the UPOU headquarters in Los Baňos.

The campaign will be a year-long crusade to train and help 10,000 grassroots women in the country gain functional digital literacy - basic ICT skills and proficiencies which will allow women to explore and reach their highest potential as women in the digital information age.

To achieve this, a series of training will be conducted all over the country, beginning in June 2011. A trainers training will be conducted prior to the rollout of the actual training courses.

My heartiest congratulations to Telecentre.org Foundation, CICT and PhilCecNet for this commendable rollout in the Philippines. I wish the digital literacy campaign all the success. It holds great promise in bettering the lives of millions of women, by helping them bridge the digital divide and honing their skills, thereby improving their prospects of better livelihood.
