Popularity of Computer Courses on the Rise in Ukraine

We are still getting feedback from our members about the telecentre in Dniprodzerzhinsk, and its impact on Ukraine’s seniors.

Nadiya Bozhok, deputy of the head of the regional association of the Red Cross of Ukraine in Zaporizhzhya (and simultaneously the principal of the program of the computer literacy) explains how her organization has created the telecentre for teaching seniors and those with disabilities:

“First students learned basics using the regular office computers of the employees of the organization and laptops of volunteers. After local and national Ukrainian TV channels showed them in the news, the bank Industrial-Bank donated 10 used computers with additional equipment to help to furnish the classroom. All of the computers have been in working condition. The students attend the school twice a week and around 10-15 students are present in each class. All students who complete the program receive certificates given by Microsoft and the Society of the Red Cross.”

According to the results of the survey among those who are listed on the waiting list to take the course (there are approximately 70 people on the list), about 70% of them live with their children and grandchildren, but the young family members are overloaded with their own work and studies. That is why seniors can only hope that the Red Cross will come to help.

Nadiya Bozhok conveys her gratitude to the volunteers – Volodymyr Korolyov, Tymofiy Hanotsky, Hanna Tron, Dmytro Chudinov, Dmytro Korol and his team of future journalists.

This project became possible in cooperation with IDEA (Information Dissemination and Equal Access) sponsored by Microsoft.

I am happy that i was able to read the telecentre.org success stories from other countries because I am still struggling on how to re-start the our own "internet ng bayan". Although It's almost 1 year but still i was not able to re-start, I am still hoping that one day we can open the internet center and would be able to serve the less opportune sector.

My problem may not be unique to other telecenters, but it is really hard to re-open if you do not have the computer units which are the main actor (equipment) for the said activity. I am on the process of coordinating with other agencies for the use of their computers units, hope to start early next year.
